6 parts gin or vodka 1 part dry vermouth cocktail onions for garnish Combine the liquid ingredients in a mixing glass with ice Stir well, to chill Strain into a cocktail glass Garnish with skewered cocktail onions (traditionally 1-2 on the same skewer, depending on onion size) Serve Much like the classic. All of them, however, are well worth your consideration. The Gibson is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth, garnished with a pickled onion. They represent a range of flavor profiles, countries of origin, and price points. The Gibson Cocktail Recipe:Whether you're a fan of Mad Men and want to make Sterling's drink of choice or you're simply looking for a great addition to your. In a large pitcher, combine the gin, 10 ounces of the pickled-onion vermouth, 2 ounces of the rosemary syrup and the lemon bitters refrigerate until chilled, about 2 hours. The 17 below are all worth space in your home spirits set-up. What’s it distilled from? How many times has it been filtered? Is there anything special about the water used to bring it back to proof? With so many options, things can get confusing quickly. The trick is deciding which ones to buy, because even among non-flavored vodkas, the options are seemingly infinite. The important part here is to understand that vodka, that famously clear and supposedly flavorless spirit, is full of character. And we’re not even going to address the huge impact that the source of the water that’s used to bring it back to proof has. Beyond the base ingredients that are steeped in water and inoculated with yeast to be fermented, the ways in which the distillation is handled also affect the final product. Ingredients Martini Makes 1 serving 2.5 fluid ounces (74 mL) of gin 0.5 fluid ounces (15 mL) of dry vermouth 2 cups (434 g) of ice Cocktail onions Cocktail Onions Makes 30 to 40 onions 1 lb (0.45 kg) of pearl onions 0.5 cups (120 mL) of sherry vinegar 0.5 cups (120 mL) of apple cider vinegar 0. Tips from the Betty Crocker Kitchens tip 1 Substitute vodka for gin, if desired. Thread onions onto skewer or toothpick add to glass. Pickled onions are the classic garnish for the Gibson cocktail, but if you love these briny, crunchy, little alliums as much as I do, you might find yourself tossing them into your gin and. Pour into chilled martini glass, straining out ice. Some prefer it sweet and pour more cranberry, while others like just a splash for color. 1 In cocktail shaker with ice, shake gin and vermouth until blended. Vodka Gibson: Substitute vodka for the gin. Add gin and vermouth stir until condensation forms on outside of glass. Affectionately called the 'cosmo,' you can adapt it to suit your taste. Fill a mixing glass or tumbler two-thirds full with ice. It can be crafted from potatoes, grains, sugar beets, and even, in the case of one of the vodkas below, quinoa. It is that pretty-in-pink, fruity cocktail made with vodka, cranberry and lime juices, and a high-end orange liqueur. No matter how many bottles you have, it’s always a good idea to stock a selection of them, because there are many different expressions of this seemingly straightforward spirit. Vodka is a key component in every home bar, whether it’s a fully kitted-out wet bar in the basement, or a small cabinet off the kitchen. “This year, I carved a 500-pound pumpkin, featuring Norman Rockwell’s painting ‘Do Unto Others.’” Her version features 22 faces from the original image, and an additional face, that of John Reckner, the “Lord of the Gourd,” who launched the Jack-o’-Lantern Spectacular in 1988. “That’s what we call pumpkins carved for the love of pumpkin carving, or a pumpkin that we’ve spent a crazy amount of time perfecting,” Koutsoukounis explains. That doesn’t stop the carvers from pouring the love into their “show stoppers,” however. Scott’s Anaconda Plan (civil War naval blockade) Proclamation and Management of the Blockade All of these would have to be imported to engage in war once those stolen from federal armories in the South had been used. Only one iron works existed that could produce artillery weapons and armaments, and few manufacturing centers of guns and bullets. Moreover, the South in 1861 has limited facilities to produce the weapons of war. This pattern would have to be modified rapidly to stay in the war. The main role of the railroads before the war was to bring goods to port the opposite direction was rarely used for transporting heavy loads from the ports to the cities or countryside. This increased the cost of transporting goods, raising the prices on agricultural products and stressed the Southern economy. The blockade overburdened roads and the railroad system in the South, which were not designed to transport troops north-south where the troops needed to go but rather west-east towards the ocean. The only way to transport these goods to the consumer were by rail. Southern reliance on cotton sales and the absence of manufacturing centers in the region delineated why the prewar Southern economy was dependent on maritime trade. Food was purchased from Texas and Arkansas or the Midwestern states. The revenue from cotton sales were used to purchase finished products and goods. More specifically, southern economy was dependent on exporting cotton to Great Britain and to the Northeastern states, where clothes and other items were manufactured. Depiction of Civil War Naval blockade (Anaconda Plan) Before the war, the South relied on coastline ports to ship goods and products to other regions and countries. In addition, the South needed markets to sell its cotton and other cash crops. The South grew crops and raw materials, which were then sold to industrial centers and in return, manufactured goods were purchased. The antebellum economy of the South relied on bringing manufactured goods from the Northern states and trading raw agricultural products with foreign countries. By implementing the Anaconda Plan and blockading the southern ocean ports and the Mississippi River (Anaconda Plan), its military would slowly suffocate as supplies dwindled and the country became isolated from its trading partners. The two objectives of the Anaconda Plan were: 1) to prevent war material, manufactured goods, and luxury items from reaching the South to boost their war effort and morale at home and 2) to stop the exportation of raw cotton to foreign manufacturers, which would bring cash to the Confederate economy. Gunboats fighting for control of the Mississippi River along the Mississippi banks Scott expected that a land war would be a long, arduous undertaking despite the general opinion that it would be over in weeks. Scott devised a plan for a naval blockade of the ports of the Confederate Atlantic shoreline, an invasion and occupation down the Mississippi River, and the consequent strangulation of the South by combined Union land and naval forces (Anaconda Plan). Since the CSA trading partners were overseas and there were no land connections, it’s economy depended on open rivers and seas. He recognized that the seceded states depended on bringing military and consumer imports in, and trading cotton and agricultural exports out. Winfield Scott reasoned that the vulnerability of a southern nation was its absence of manufacturing, supplies, and weapons production in the region. Winfield Scott reasoned that the Anaconda plan and by depriving the South of foreign trade and the ability to import or manufacture weapons and military supplies, the war could be won with a minimum of battlefield casualties. The purpose of Scott’s plan was to devise an approach to prevent imports and exports, which would squeeze and strangle (like the snake) the Confederacy into submission using a naval blockade. General Winfield Scott’s Anaconda Plan was designed to defeat the Confederate States of America (CSA) through economic measures rather than a land war. The Anaconda Plan was the strategic plan proposed by General Winfield Scott early in the American Civil War. Moreover, reliable prediction of VTE incidence would enable a more shared decision making process between patients and surgeons as to managing one of the potential major risks of undergoing below knee surgery. 6 A more precise understanding of the risks and incidence of VTE following below knee surgery would enable surgeons to select anticoagulant treatment strategies based on evidence. While chemoprophylaxis may impact VTE rates, exposure to these prophylactic medications can itself have serious side effects, including adverse bleeding events or even death. Within the below knee surgical population, wide variation in the use of VTE chemoprophylaxis remains-due, in part, to a lack of consensus regarding risks and treatment benefits. 1-3 VTE is often caused by the immobilization or tissue injury that result from trauma or surgery, and can be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality following orthopaedic surgery. Venous Thromboembolic Disease (VTE)-encompassing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE)-occurs in 1 to persons per year in Western countries, and is the third most common cardiovascular disease after myocardial infarction and stroke. By comprehensively assessing the incidence of VTE after below knee surgery, we illustrated a potential source of inaccuracy in the use of retrospective ICD-9-CM based data capture methodologies. Using ICD-9-CM codes to search for a VTE demonstrated a low PPV, however, because only 60.8% could be verified by a radiological study. This study found that ICD-9-CM code use had an 89.5% sensitivity rate for VTE. The resulting sensitivity scores were 95.1% (327/344) for DVT, 83.1% (108/130) for PE, 75.6% (59/78) for DVT/PE combined, and 89.5% (494/552) for VTE in total.ĬONCLUSION The overall rate of VTE after below knee surgery was 2.5%. Of those patients identified as having VTE, 344 (62.3%) had a DVT, 130 (23.6%) had a PE, and 78 (14.1%) were recorded as having both a DVT and PE. Positive predictive value (PPV) and sensitivity of ICD-9-CM codes were calculated. The medical records of 21,904 patients were evaluated to assess the validity of the VTE ICD-9-CM code against the documentation of DVT or PE in radiology reports. METHODS Current Procedural Terminology codes and ICD-9-CM codes were used to identify patients who had undergone below knee surgery and developed a reported VTE. The purpose of this study was (1) to determine the incidence of VTE in a large cohort of patients who had undergone surgery below the knee, and (2) to assess the validity of the ICD-9-CM procedure codes used. BACKGROUND To determine the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) after surgeries performed below the knee, previous studies have used the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) procedure codes to identify a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or PE (pulmonary embolism) event. |
